There are moments in a student’s journey that mark the end of one chapter and the beginning of another. For Boland College’s graduates, the 2026 Graduation Ceremony was one of those moments — a celebration of perseverance, achievement and the exciting possibilities that lie ahead.

The ceremony brought together graduates, their families and loved ones, College leadership, staff and stakeholders to celebrate the achievements of students from across Boland College. While graduation marks the completion of an academic programme, it also represents something more: the moment when students step forward into new opportunities in further study, employment, entrepreneurship and life beyond the College.

This message of transition was echoed by the keynote speaker, Dr Gillian Arendse, who reminded graduates that every new chapter means moving from a world we know into one we have yet to experience. Drawing on his own journey, he described the space between a closed door and a new opportunity as a “long hallway” — one that requires resilience, stamina and determination to navigate.

Dr Arendse encouraged graduates to embrace Motivation 3.0, built around autonomy, mastery and purpose. He challenged them to take ownership of their lives, strive to become masters of their chosen craft and understand why they do what they do. His message was ultimately a call to action, urging the graduates to use their education to make a difference and, in his words, to “go and change the world.”

The message was complemented by the presence of Boland College alumnus Chef Ashley Wynand, whose own journey provided a personal reminder of where vocational education can lead. Having once been a Boland College student himself, Chef Wynand was able to share his experiences from the perspective of someone who had stood in the same position as the graduates. His story highlighted the importance of passion, perseverance and being willing to embrace the opportunities that come along the way.

Perhaps the most fitting example of this transition happened during the ceremony itself.

One of the graduating students had secured a job interview on the same day as her graduation. Rather than asking her to choose between celebrating her achievement and pursuing a career opportunity, the College adjusted the programme and arranged for her to be conferred earlier than scheduled, allowing her to leave in time for the interview.

It was a small change to the programme, but it became a significant moment.

The student later contacted the College to thank the team for making the allowance and to share the news that she had been successful in securing the position.

Her story brought the purpose of graduation into sharp focus. After years of studying, she stood on the graduation stage as a qualified graduate — and shortly afterwards, walked into an interview that would open the next door in her career.

For the College, being able to support that transition was as meaningful as celebrating the qualification itself. It was a reminder that behind every certificate is a person with ambitions, challenges and opportunities that do not always fit neatly into a programme or timetable.

For the Class of 2026, graduation marks an achievement worth celebrating — but it is also the beginning of something new.

Some graduates will enter the workplace, others will continue their studies, start businesses or use their skills to contribute to their communities. Their paths will be different, but each carries the experience and knowledge gained during their time at Boland College.

As graduates celebrated alongside their families, lecturers and College staff, the ceremony captured something bigger than the awarding of qualifications. It celebrated what happens when determination is given an opportunity to grow, and when education becomes a stepping stone towards a future that has yet to be written.

For Boland College, the greatest measure of success is not simply seeing students cross the graduation stage, but seeing them step confidently beyond it. The Class of 2026 has taken its next step. Now, their future is theirs to shape.
