Boland College has reached an important milestone by becoming one of the first Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) Colleges in the Western Cape to successfully obtain an Energy Performance Certificate (EPC), issued by the South African National Energy Development Institute (SANEDI) in accordance with SANS 1544:2014.
This landmark certification confirms that the College’s building energy consumption has been accurately measured, verified and benchmarked against national efficiency standards. It demonstrates full compliance with South Africa’s energy performance regulations and reinforces Boland College’s commitment to sustainable infrastructure management, sound governance and responsible use of public resources.
Unlike design-based estimates, an EPC is based on actual operational energy data. The assessment measures building performance against the thresholds outlined in SANS 10400-XA:2021, providing a credible benchmark to monitor energy use, identify inefficiencies, guide infrastructure upgrades and manage operational costs more effectively.
Compliance with EPC requirements is mandatory for qualifying public buildings under the National Energy Act and related regulations. By securing this certification, Boland College not only mitigates legal, financial and governance risks, but also strengthens accountability and transparency in energy management.
Beyond regulatory compliance, the EPC supports long-term strategic planning by enabling smarter energy use, cost containment and environmentally responsible campus operations.
“This achievement reflects our commitment to responsible governance and sustainable operations,” said Deputy Principal Mr Plaatjies. “Being the first TVET college to receive this certification demonstrates our leadership in ensuring that our facilities are not only compliant, but efficient and future-focused in how we manage public infrastructure.”
The certification process was led by the Infrastructure Department under the leadership of Assistant Director Mr Davids, supported by team members Mr Magobongo, Mr Timmey and Mr Zweni, with technical guidance provided by Greenx Engineering.
As one of the first TVET Colleges in the Western Cape to obtain an Energy Performance Certificate, Boland College continues to set a benchmark for sustainability, compliance and operational excellence within the TVET sector.
