On Wednesday, 20 August 2025, Boland College proudly brought together students, staff, and key stakeholders in a groundbreaking event focused on inclusivity in Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET). We were honoured to welcome esteemed guests, including Mr Jansen, College Council Chairperson, Mrs Welgemoed, College Council Member and Mr Nobala, College Council Member, who also delivered the keynote address.
The programme opened with a warm welcome by Mrs Baxter, the Assistant Director: Student Support and Development Services, followed by remarks from the Principal, Mr Goodwin, setting the tone for a day dedicated to dialogue, action and transformation.
The keynote address Mr Nobala, titled “Breaking Barriers: Realising Inclusive Technical and Vocational Education”, highlighted the urgent need to create environments where all students, regardless of ability, can thrive.
A highlight of the day was the Student Voices Panel, titled “Our Stories, Our Strength”, where students Athanathi Mateke, Melashini Presencie, Kaylin Lentse and Thalia Mazza courageously shared their lived experiences. They spoke about the challenges they have faced within the TVET system, the barriers they have overcome, and what true inclusion means in their learning journeys. A key theme throughout the discussion was the instrumental role Boland College has played in its tertiary journey. The students expressed deep gratitude to the institution, not only for fostering a more inclusive environment but also for ensuring that differently abled students receive meaningful support. This support extends beyond the classroom, enriching their overall campus experience and daily lives.
The conversation continued with an engaging Panel Dialogue facilitated by the Deputy Principal: Registration Services, Mrs Wendy Adams. The panel included Mrs Anneline Taljaard (Psychometrist & Disability Support Unit coordinator), Ms Renata Harmse (Education Specialist) and Mr Kyle Williams (Edit Micro). Discussions explored:
- Access to skills training: ensuring the right student is placed in the right programme.
- Universal Design of Learning: practical adaptations that allow diverse students, including those with disabilities, to succeed in the same classroom.
- Workplace readiness: addressing challenges from training to employment and how employers can support inclusive transitions.
Adding to the inspiration, guest speaker Ms Jiyane, a proud Boland College alumna and successful graduate. In her talk, “From TVET to Transformation – My Journey”, she shared how skills training empowered her to overcome obstacles and build a thriving career, despite the challenges of being differently abled. Her story served as a powerful reminder of the transformative impact of education and resilience.
The event concluded with closing remarks from the Deputy Principal: Registration Services: Mrs Wendy Adams, who acknowledged the courage and contributions of all voices heard throughout the day.
“Today is more than a conversation; it’s a commitment. Together, we are reimagining TVET as a space where every student’s potential is recognised, supported and celebrated,” said Mrs Baxter.
Importantly, this dialogue took place in August, which marks annual TVET Month in South Africa. Under the theme “TVET for ALL: Skills. Opportunity. Change.” the event strongly resonated with the call to ensure that all students are not only seen, but truly heard.
This event forms part of Boland College’s ongoing efforts to promote equity, access, and inclusion across all campuses.
