The launch of the CoVE project unfolded over two days in March at Boland College’s Worcester campus marking a significant step towards enhancing Climate-Smart Agriculture in South Africa. This collaborative initiative combines the expertise and resources of three South African TVET colleges, two EU partners, one South African academic partner, and one South African private partner.

The project has garnered strong support from key public and private stakeholders in South Africa. Representatives from Stellenbosch University, Boland College, Mr. Hans Nijhoff from Maastricht School of Management, and other stakeholders participated in the two-day launch and workshop.

The project’s main goal is to establish ‘Vocational Excellence’ in the climate- and water-smart horticulture sector, ensuring the development of high-quality skills and competencies that lead to rewarding careers, in line with the requirements of an innovative, inclusive, and sustainable rural economy. Mr. Vincent Uys and Mr. Hans Nijhoff spearheaded efforts to introduce the CoVE project to stakeholders, who exhibited remarkable enthusiasm and eagerness to engage with this initiative.

During the project’s second phase, the team collaborated with industry partners to explore the latest technological advancements in the college’s catchment area. This phase also aided in identifying gaps between the theoretical knowledge students acquire in the classroom and the practical skills required by the industry.

The team expresses excitement about the forthcoming developments in the project and anticipates harvesting the success it is poised to produce.
