Farming Management and Mechanisation

What you should know

Once you complete this programme, you will gain valuable business management skills, and you’ll learn about essential elements that have a direct bearing on managing a farm, such as financial management, data management, and maintenance management.

Requirements

  • Grade 12 pass with a minimum aggregate of 45%
  • Required Subjects: Mathematics with a minimum of 40% / Mathematical Literacy with a minimum of 50% and Agricultural Technology
  • NCV: Student must have successfully completed any NCV Level 4 with a minimum aggregate of 45%

3 Years (18 months theory and 18 months practical work experience)

What subjects will I be taking?

FIRST YEAR

FIRST SEMESTER – N4

Management: Farming

This subject outlines the functions and responsibilities of all role-players in agriculture, factors that impact on agricultural production as well as environmental factors influencing agriculture. It focuses on the role of the farmer as an entrepreneur, as well as farm and estate planning with an overview of key aspects of insurance applicable to the farmer.

Animal and Plant Production
This subject will develop the knowledge, interest and skill which will enable students to apply the principles of plant and animal production in a farming business. Students will learn about different soil types, the role of soil nutrition in plant growth as well as production principles.

The identification of the different principles of the morphology and physiology of plants forms part of this subject. Students will acquire practical knowledge of crop production, irrigation, fertilization as well as pest and disease management. Different types of weed control and harvesting procedures are also covered. As part of the animal production component students will learn how to identify and explain the different types and structures of digestive systems of farm animals. The ability to handle Livestock at all stages of rearing and production also forms part of this component.

Financial Management: Farming

Financial Management: Farming teaches the basic accounting principles in relation to farm management. The subject matter focuses on farm budgeting systems, analysis of information systems and the interpretation of financial statements, balance sheets and income statements.

Computer Practice: Farming

This subject provides students with skills to do basic computer functions – covering Microsoft Word, Excel, Access and Power Point.

Farming Technology and Mechanisation

​This subject will equip students to make a productive contribution to a farming enterprise as managers or owners. Students will develop the knowledge, interest and skills which will enable them to apply effective maintenance management of buildings and mechanical and electrical equipment.

SECOND SEMESTER – N5
