A growing transport and logistics sector ensures the sound functioning of the economy and plays a very significant role in the supply chain for many other sectors of the economy. Logistics describes the management of activities associated with the planning and movement of materials, parts and finished goods across companies, together with the information flow that accompanies it.

Freight Logistics
The syllabus includes the following: supply chain; supply and demand principle; difference between transport and logistics; logistics outsourcing functions; value add; traffic and transportation; warehousing and storage; materials handling; packaging; financial concepts relating to cost and profit calculation.
Students will be able to: explain the practice and environment of the freight logistics industry in South Africa; identify and explain different clusters of activities in the freight logistics environment; know how to apply all the key financial concepts used in freight logistics; draft an elementary income statement illustrating typical freight logistics income and expenditures; and draft the organisational structures of medium to large freight logistics operations. They will also have knowledge about the broad responsibilities and outputs of various departments in a logistics operation.
Transport Economics
Students will be provided with insight into concepts like: the economy; transport; mobility; transport economics; transport systems; transport infrastructure; transport market; transport marketplace; demand; supply; and elasticity.
The subject will discuss: the regulations of transport economics; transport as a service and industry within the South African economy; the role and function of transport in the growth of the economy; the influence of competition on transport systems; the impact of international trade on transport systems; and the non-economical role and function of transport within the South African economy.
Transport Operations
After completion of this subject, students will be able to outline the nature, role and importance of operations in a transport business. Students will explore the legislative framework that regulates the operations of a transport business & the influence of business ethics on the operations of a transport business. Furthermore, they will know about typical operations across various transport modes; the relationship between transport operations and service delivery; and what the technical and legal requirements are for transportation and vehicle maintenance.
