With the ever increasing use of technology and industries flourishing the amount of pollution in our environment is increasing at a rapid pace. Keeping our environment clean is a very important part of our lives. It is important to focus on this as we have to make sure that the environment is preserved for future generations. Water pollution and litter are considered to be two of the main causes of the environment being dirty.
To create awareness regarding these aspects Paarl campus annually spends time on the green initiative with the slogan of “Reuse, Reduce and Recycle!”. This year’s green day took the approach even further, by bringing it to the community. The goal of creating a cleaner environment and empowering people to be conscious of the environment was taken to the streets using a trailer carrying about 10 learners singing and chanting the slogan. The 2015 and 2016 SRC representatives travelled to various parts of Paarl and trees were planted at Charleston Hill, New Orleans, Noorder-Paarl and at the PC Newman clinic.
The Waste Management Department of the Drakenstein Municipality once again showed their support by providing brooms, black bags, gloves and masks. Six interns of the Department of Environmental Development were also there to assist. The Parks Department showed their support by donating 12 trees. Other institutions also supporting the initiative were Radio KC, Wimpy and Mini Max Cinemas.
The popular hashtag for the day was #BCGreenDay and this created a buzz on social media platforms. We would like to thank all those who showed their support and we hope to elevate the initiative even more next year.
The task is ours to create a better environment for today that will impact how we live tomorrow.
